Excerpts
“God still calls us to new insights and deeper obedience that require we change our views and practices. Only a perfect church does not need to learn and change, and that church does not exist. In fact, it never has. Not even the first-century church understood all the implications of the gospel. Healthy churches are not afraid to restudy, pray, ask hard questions and change their practices when God brings new insight into the gospel—even if it is controversial and creates opposition from the supporters of tradition. Peter created a huge controversy by baptizing Cornelius and it took decades to resolve the trouble. Much of the New Testament was written about this issue—including much of Acts. Peter was not trying to start fires, he was simply being obedient to the call of God and controversy came.” (p. 13).
“The great commission must be obeyed even if it requires we make changes to reach people we cannot reach by what we are presently doing. Most churches already have nearly everyone they will ever reach by doing what they are presently doing. The church is not just for people like ourselves. It is for everyone.” (p. 19).
